Choquequirao

Choquequirao (Sometimes also written as Choquekiraw) is an Inka city ruin that was discovered in the 80s. Since a couple of years they have been clearing the ruins of the jungle that overtook the ruins when it was abandoned. It is believed that almost 2000 people lived there in its glory days.

I did a guided tour with only a small group of 2 other people plus the guide. The other 2 were a couple from London in their 30s.

Lead-up to Inti Raimi

When I arrived in Cusco it was the beginning of the lead-up to Inti Raimi (Quechua Inti: Sun, Raimi: Festival), the festival of the sun around the solstice. Even before the festival on the 24th of June, every day there is marches and celebration in the town square of Cusco where the different departments and institutions of Cusco present themselves and their tradition. Sadly I had to leave Cusco just before the solstice but I would have loved to see the actual show at saksay huaman.

On the way to Arequipa Christelle and I wondered if there were any interesting sites along the way that we could visit. On the map we found the Reserva Nacional de Salinas y Aguadas Blancas. So we took a detour through there. It was mostly a high altitude desert but with great panoramas and lots of alpacas and vicunas. At one point we got out and walked around a bit but there was not much interesting stuff to be found.

Isla del Sol

From La Paz I drove north to Copacabana to take a boat to Isla del Sol which is supposedly where the first Inka king was born. I did not make it there the same day so I stayed for the night on the shores of lake Titicaca.

It was a bit overcast but you could see the high (>6000m) mountains of the Andes in the distance.

The next day I had to take a barge over the bay to get to Copacabana. Anyone taking this way to Peru also has to go via the barges. On both shores there is a huge amount of ferries waiting for passengers so the bandwidth on the bay is very high and there is no waiting lines.

La Paz

Before arriving to La Paz I had to stay another night somewhere. I found a nice mountain pass with a small maintenance road to an antenna tower. It was a little windy but in the slipstream of the car I was able to cook some dinner without the wind blowing out the gas stove.

El Alto

On my way to La Paz I had to go through El Alto. El Alto has a larger population than La Paz itself. While La Paz is in the valley, El Alto is on the plane around the valleys edges and is much more of a sprawl than La Paz. The quality of the buildings is also significantly lower. From La Paz there is multiple cable car lines going up to El Alto.

The drive from Sucre to La Paz takes 9 hours (even though it is a fairly well maintained toll road). It is a beautiful ride but after 5 hours I started looking for a place to sleep for the night.

On the iOverlander App I found an entry for a camping spot that seemed good and on OpenStreetMaps there was a road that went there. I found the entrance to the road and it did go for some 500m to an old graveyard but sadly it seemed like the map was outdated after that for there were fences crossing the section where the road should have been and behind the fence there was already plenty of grass. So the map must have been outdated for some 10 years already. This was not the first time OSM had been wrong though so I was not entirely surprised.
So I turned around and wanted to look for a new place but the way back went in a right turn around the graveyard and in my turn and with only my headlights to go by I must have missed the ditch that was there. In any case, I ended up plowing my car more or less straight into said ditch.

Sucre

Potosi

On our way to Sucre, Bismarck and I drove through Potosi - a mining town where his brother lived. Bismarck told me that Potosi used to be the richest town in the world and bigger than London in its heyday. That was because there was an insane amount of silver deposits in the mountains and still to this day the silver mine is active. From Potosi they shipped the silver down the river and over the Atlantic back to Spain which is the reason that Argentina, the “Rio Plata” and “La Plata” are named after the precious metal.
We only went to town to get an ice cream however and then we were back on our way to Sucre.

Uyuni and southwestern Bolivia

I went on a 3 day guided tour of the salt flats and the surrounding area. Our tour guide, Bismarck, was a pretty chill dude and the other visitors on the tour, 3 Irish and 1 Russian folks, were also pretty chill. We got along quite well.
There was a lot of driving happening between stops so we took turns playing music on the bluetooth. I spent a lot of time reading books and got through 2 books on this tour alone.

Crossing to Bolivia and driving to Uyuni

After Humahuaca it wasn’t far to to the Bolivian border anymore. I was already in the altiplano at over 4000 meters and I wouldn’t get below 3000 meters until I went to Sucre later. Along the way I saw huge herds of alpacas and llamas that were grazing on the huge planes.

On my way to Humahuaca there was a police checkpoint. I had not noticed that one of my headlights had failed and so the police officer wanted to give me a fine. Or rather, he said that technically he would be supposed to give me a fine *wink* *wink*. After my parking ticket situation I really was not into getting another ticket so I went with the suggestion and gave him US$20.

Cuesta de Miranda

On the drive to Cafayate I drove through the Cuesta de Miranda. A very nice mountain range that was red with lots of shrubs all over which gave it a very interesting red and green contrast.

North of Mendoza are the Provincial Park Ischigualasto and National Park Talampaya. The latter I did not visit because you can only go there with guided tours but the former was quite interesting.

Dinosaur Museum

Ischigualasto is an area where the formation of the Andes mountains unearthed soil from the Triassic age. Many Triassic dinosaur skeletons have been found over the years in this area.

Mendoza was definitely the culinary highlight of my trip so far. It was a highlight in many other ways as well but my stay was very much defined by the food and the people surrounding that. That was of course no accident, I figured that in the most prominent wine growing region in Argentina where the famous Malbec wine is grown there must be good food to go with it.

My route takes me west again; back to Mendoza. That means that I have to cross the country laterally - through the literal Pampa. The province of La Pampa is right in the middle of the country and is a mostly flat and arid landscape. To change things up I went to the Parque Nacional Lihué Calel in the middle of the route.

Peninsula Valdez

Camerones

Camerones is on the way to Peninsula Valdez. The name translates to “Shrimps”; probably due to its fisher village nature. Some 20km south of the village is a national reserve for the magellan penguin colony. The penguins there are not shy but you need to stick to the metal walkway that has been built over the colony.

The Penguin Calendar. I arrived during the migration period which is why there were not so many penguins left anymore.

My next destination was supposed to be peninsula Valdez after I decided to not go to El Calafate and El Chalten the supposedly best places in all of Argentina. I left them for a future trip where I could come a bit earlier in the year because I already noticed that it gets below freezing temperatures at night so I wanted to go there when it is a bit warmer.

About 800km south of Barriloche is the national park Perito Moreno. It is sometimes confused with the small nearby town Perito Moreno but more often it is confused with the glacier called Perito Moreno in the national park Las Glaciares which is the famous glacier that is on every top 10 list of things to do in Argentina. I only know of the place because the owner of the hostel in Barriloche is an avid hiker as well and when I told him that I am here for the hiking he immediately suggested this route and said that it was one of — if not the — best hikes he ever did. So I quickly told the park administration about my plans and reserved a 3 day hiking round trip in the park that involved visits to 3 distinct refugios (shelters) in the park. Very cool that this is completely free.

Barriloche

In Barriloche I stayed in a nice cozy hostel that had an awesome common room where meeting other travelers was very easy. I met a bunch of people from Argentina and Paraguay who used the Easter holidays for a hiking vacation in Barriloche.

One of the people that I met was Luisina (Lu) who spoke really good English which made communication a lot easier. She taught me a lot about Argentina and its people and we did a lot of hikes around Barriloche together. Sadly she had bent her ankle on the first hike but she did not let that deter her from doing more hikes.

Ruta Nacional 40 ("Ruta Cuarenta")

Ruta Cuarenta is the Argentinian equivalent of the American Route 66. Along the way uncountable motorbike groups have left their emblem stickers on the different road signs and you can buy merchandise carrying the markings for this iconic road. And what a road it is.

The Ruta 40 winds itself through the outskirts of the Andes all the way from the very north to almost the very south just shy of Ushuaia. The section that I drove on to Barriloche was a very scenic drive with a different view waiting behind each turn.

I did not drive south through Chile as originally planned. Someone from my hometown - Penzberg - that a friend from school knows, has a winery in Barreal, Argentina. I checked on the map and it was “only” 750km away. a bit more than a days drive. So I changed plans and went over there first; thinking that I could still drive back again. It was not that far off after all.

From Santiago I started driving south, expecting to take Ruta Austral in Chile all the way south and crossing to Argentina there. On that route, some 200km south of Santiago, 80km east of Curico lies Potrero Grande in a nice valley at the end of the road there are the Cascada Las Buitreras.

On the campsite there were very lovely dogs that wanted to be petted.

The Flight

The first weird thing that I noticed on this journey was that there were a lot of german dudes going to Santiago de Chile with me. In a glimpse at one of them I saw that they all had their names and Bayern International on the card that was dangling around their necks on a leather lanyard. Definitely something political going on there.

Es war komisch nach einem Monat Leben in einem Van, wieder in einer Großstadt zu sein. Noch dazu in einem Hostelzimmer mit 5 weiteren Reisenden. Das Hostel hieß nicht umsonst Nomads - All Nations. Hier gab es Leute aus allen möglichen Ländern, wie Japan oder Chile. Wenngleich das Hostel eine sehr gute Lage hatte, so war die Geräuschkulisse doch ziemlich krass: Eine tickende Ampel unter dem Fenster und direkt gegenüber eine geschäftige Zugüberführung vom Hauptbahnhof. Da wahr ich über meine In-Ear-Kopfhörer schon sehr froh.

Auf der letzten Etappe meines Road Trips habe ich nicht so viel gemacht; stattdessen habe ich es eher Ruhig angehen lassen.

Alligator Creek

Mein erster Stop nach Airlie Beach war der Alligator Creek Nationalpark wo es anscheinend langsam anfing mit Krokodilen, aber ich habe hier keine gesehen. Ich hätte unterwegs eine Krokodilfarm besuchen können, aber ich habe bei meinem letzten Besuch in Australien bereits Salzwasser- und Frischwasserkrokodile gesehen, daher musste ich das nicht erzwingen.
Es ist hier zur Zeit Trockenzeit, daher transportierte der Fluss nicht sonderlich viel Wasser und hatte an vielen Stellen stehende Wasserpools in denen Algen wuchsen. Es gab allerdings 1,5m lange Aale.

Drivin’ … a lot

Auf dem Campingplatz in Noosa empfahlen mir die Leute, mir die Carnarvon Gorge anzusehen. Ich fuhr natürlich sofort hin, weil ich zwischen Rainbow Beach und Airlie Beach keine weiteren Ziele hatte. Ich unterschätzte jedoch erheblich wie weit der Carnarvon National Park im Landesinnneren lag.
Auf dem Weg (770km) musste ich zwei mal voll tanken und bin durch verschiedenste Biome von Australien gefahren. Von Regenwald bis Steppe, war da alles dabei.

Day 18 - Byron Bay to Rainbow Beach

Byron Bay & Nimbin

Byron Bay ist das Backpacker-Ziel schlechthin. Ich glaube hier gibt es mehr Backpacker, als Einwohner. Weithin auch bekannt als das Surf Mekka von Australien. Dementsprechend gibt es hier auch viele Surfer und Surfschulen. In der Innenstadt reihen sich Reisebüros, Restaurants und Surf-Ausstatter aneinander. Neben den Stränden und Surfschulen hat die Stadt selbst allerdings nur noch einen alten Leuchtturm und dorthinführende Wanderwege zu bieten.

Am Morgen entdeckte ich zufällig, dass am Strand ein Markt stattfand. Die Stände verkauften Größtenteils Essen, oder (Kunst-)Handwerkswaren von ortsansässigen Künstlern, trotzdem brauchte man gut 20 Minuten bis man von einem Ende des Marktes bis zum Anderen gelaufen war.

Day 10 - Newcastle to Emerald Beach feat. Giant Majestic Sea Flap Flap

Nachdem ich den letzten Post in Newcastle geschrieben hatte, bin ich noch am selben Tag nach Norden aufgebrochen. Mein ziel war Hawks Nest nördlich von der Bucht Nelson Bay. Kurz vor dem Ziel blieb ich an einem Rastplatz stehen und blieb dort für die Nacht.

Nelson Bay

Ich weiß meistens erst am Vortag, was ich eigentlich an dem Tag unternehme. An diesem Tag wollte ich wissen was es in Hawks Nest so gibt. Vorneweg: es ist in der Tat ein sprichwörtliches Nest. Allerdings gibt es auch in einem Nest interessante Leute. Hier habe ich zum Beispiel eine Gruppe Australier am Strand getroffen, die dort auf der Jagd nach Haien waren. Das sagten sie zumindest, aber alles das sie taten war Bier trinken und Gras rauchen. Einer von ihnen kam sogar von Tasmanien. Er erzählte mir, dass es auf der anderen Seite der Bucht einen guten Platz zum Wale beobachten gibt, aber dafür hätte ich für zwei Stunden um die Bucht herum zurück fahren müssen, also hab ich das nicht gemacht und bin stattdessen weiter nach Crescent Head gefahren, wo ich es auf wundersame Weise zu einem Campingplatz geschafft, dessen Zubringerstraße mehr Schlaglöcher hatte, als der Mond. Das war sogar noch mein erster bezahlter Campingplatz. Hier merkte ich dann sofort, dass die Schulferien hier begonnen hatten, denn der Campingplatz war voll mit Kindern. Er war auch voll mit wilden Hunden, die die Australier Dingos nennen.

Day 4 - Sydney to Newcastle (via. Blue Mountains)

Reisen ist schön. Ich kann es nicht anders sagen. Die letzten 4 Tage waren großartig.
Nachdem ich meine erste und letzte Prüfung absolviert, mein Auto vom Flughafen abgeholt, es heil quer durch Sydney durch die rush hour geschafft, mein Gepäck eingeladen, mich von meiner Homestayfamilie verabschiedet und dann noch nachts aus Sydney hinaus geschafft habe, konnte die Reise endlich beginnen.
Linksfahren ist übrigens gar nicht so schlimm, wenn man eine Automatikschaltung hat. Ich habe mich da ziemlich schnell umgewöhnt. Nur beim Abbiegen und an Kreuzungen ist es manchmal noch verwirrend weil ich mir nie ganz sicher bin wo ich denn hinschauen soll.

Gestern habe ich mir die Nacht um die Ohren geschlagen, um nicht zu verschlafen, denn ich musst um 7 Uhr Morgens in der Stadt sein. Das hat mir endlich mal wieder die Gelegenheit gegeben auf den Teamspeak-Server zu hüpfen und mit meinen Freunden Daheim abzuhängen. Jetzt weiß ich auch mal wieder was da so abgeht.
Bin also in die Stadt gefahren, hab mich dort mit Lizzy getroffen, mir nen Kaffee gegönnt und in der Lobby des Veranstalters rumgegammelt bis uns der Shuttlebus zum Flugfeld gebracht hat.

Supanova Convention

Letzten Sonntag war hier die Supanova Convention. Im Grunde eine Messe für Fans für alles mögliche in der Popkultur. Science Fiction, Gaming, Wrestling, Cosplay, Animes und Kinofilme. Vom Angebot her sehr stark mit der Gamescom vergleichbar, allerdings nur 10% so groß. Die Gamescom hat insgesamt ca. 10 Hallen während die Supanova nur 2 kleinere Hallen belegt und diese größtenteils mit Merchandise zustellt - nicht dass das etwas schlechtes wäre.
Es waren auch einige prominente Schauspieler da von denen man sich Autogramme geben lassen konnte, aber leider musste man sich dafür für $40 Tokens kaufen und das war es mir nicht wert. Zu den Schauspielern zählten größtenteils Schauspieler, die in Australien leben, wie Chris Hemsworth(Thor), Temurea Morrison(Jango Fett), Christopher Judge(Teal’c) und noch einige Andere, die ich aber nicht kenne.

Mein Freund Edy und ich haben diesen kleinen Prototypen von einem potentiellen Spiel im Rahmen unserer Game Design Vorlesung erstellt.
Es war ziemlich stressig und ich habe den ganzen heutigen Tag damit verbracht last-minute Bugfixes einzubauen und den Playtestingbericht auszuarbeiten, um das Ganze dann letztendlich gerade noch so in allerletzter Sekunde abgeben zu können. Ich sage euch, mein Gehirn war 3 Stunden danach immer noch auf Vollgas.

Das Spiel steuert ihr mit WASD, Leertaste und Shift. Mehr sage ich jetzt mal nicht. Probiert euch daran und versucht den längsten Lauf zu schaffen! Den Highscore hat im Moment Laura mit 8:40 Minuten.

VIVID Festival

Lichterfest! Oder vielmehr … Lightshowfest!
Sie nennen es zwar Vivid Festival, aber ich würde es eher ein Lichterfestwoche nennen. Tja, manchmal ist Deutsch halt doch die präzisere Sprache. Wie ihr in den Videos sehen könnt wird dabei die ganze Innenstadt mit Lichtern und Beamern (Stichwort Projection Mapping) bunt bestrahlt. An den Straßen verkaufen Händler wild blinkende Lichtschwerter, Handschuhe und sogar blinkende Fidget-Spinner. Sie sperren sogar einen Großteil der Innenstadt ab, um Platz für die Menschenmassen zu schaffen die zum Hafen strömen.

Cybersecurity Challenge Australia

Verdammt, ich hab völlig vergessen darüber einen Blogpost zu verfassen. Der Cybersecurity Challenge Australia (CySCA [seiska]) ist jetzt schon mehr als 2 Wochen her.

CySCA war ein Hackingwettbewerb zwischen vielen Australischen Universiäten. Jede Uni stellte bis zu 4 Teams mit 4 Bachelorstudenten, die dann innerhalb von 24 Stunden um die Wette hackten, um möglichst viele Punkte zu erreichen. Ich hatte leider ein wenig Pech mit meinen Teammitgliedern. Einer tauchte nach dem Entschluss, ein Team zu bilden, nie wieder auf und ein weiterer stellte sich als ziemlich nutzlos heraus. Letzterer hielt auch nicht die ganze Nacht durch und ging schon in den Morgenstunden nach hause. Jay und Ich waren letztendlich die einzigen Überlebenden unseres Teams. Eines von 3 Teams die die Nacht überstanden hatten.
Das große Thema dieses Challenges war “Internet of Things”.

In meinen Mittsemesterferien bin ich mit ein paar Freunden und Freundesfreunden in die Blue Mountains wandern gegangen.
Der Blue Mountains National Park ist ein Nationalpark im Westen von Sydney. Es gibt dort anscheinend auch eine Seilbahn die über ein großes Tal fährt, aber die haben wir uns nicht angesehen. Wir sind viel mehr zu den Wentworth Falls gewandert und haben dort sogar gebadet. War super spaßig!

Ich habe vor Jahren Mirror’s Edge gespielt. In dem Spiel rennt man eigentlich nur von A nach B … auf eine sehr coole Art und Weise.

Die Sportart nennt sich Parkour (Wikipedia) und seit Mirror’s Edge wollte ich das immer schon ausprobieren.
Hier habe ich endlich die Gelegenheit dazu. Ich gehe jetzt schon seit 6 Wochen regelmäßig zum Training und ich habe es noch kein einziges mal bereut (auch wenn ich mich beim ersten mal maßlos überanstrengt habe und mein Mittagessen und den kostbaren Kaffee über den Hallenboden verteilt habe. Ja! Diese Details sind wichtig!) Ich habe hier ein paar neue Freunde und viele Bekanntschaften gefunden. Shams - er hat mir die verlassene High School gezeigt - habe ich hier kennen gelernt.
Noch bin ich nicht so weit wie die Profis, aber es gibt auch noch Anfänger außer mir. Die Pros können einen Wandsprung (Tic-Tac) über einen Stapel aus 6 Bierkästen. Das sind noch Ziele für mich!

17. März 2017 - St. Pattricks Day - The Rocks, Sydney

The Rocks ist die Altstadt von Sydney. Hier wurde damals das erste Fort errichtet um die Hafeneinfahrt gegen böswillige Schiffe zu verteidigen.

In dem Viertel gibt es mehrere Irish Pubs und Restaurants. Das Museum of contemporary art ist auch dort. Eintritt kostenlos; ich war aber noch nicht drin.
St. Pattricks Day ist ein irischer Feiertag, an dem der erste christliche Missionar in Irland gefeiert wird. Heutzutage wird der Tag eher als Anlass zum Trinken genommen.
An dem Tag hat es, ganz nach irischer Manier, geregnet und es war kalt. Perfekte Konditionen für ein Date richtig? Richtig. Ich war mit Lizzy Paulson-Wilson (Ihr Facebook Profil für euch Stalker da draußen) auf einem Date! Ich hab leider nicht ganz bedacht, dass

Nur ein Paar kleine Dinge die es mir irgendwie angetan haben.

Wer auch immer die Idee hatte Puderzucker, Erdbeeren und Nutella auf eine Pizza zu tun, verdient den Nobelpreis für Kochen (ich bin mir sicher es gibt was vergleichbares für Köche)!

Nutella in Kaffee ist auch nicht schlecht.

Ich mag den Bart von unserem Screenwriting Übungsleiter, da komm ich mir immer vor wie in dem Briefing für den Angriff auf den Todesstern…

Jetzt wo ich 2 Wochen Uni hinter mir habe, kann ich sagen: Das Unisystem hier ist sehr anders als das Unsere und definitv mehr Arbeit für den Studenten. Jetzt verstehe ich auch warum man hier mit 4 Fächern bereits Vollzeit beschäftigt ist.

Benotung

Das fängt schon bei der Benotung an. Statt 1...6 oder 1.0-5.0 haben sie hier N -> P -> C -> D -> HD. Das steht für Failed(N), Passed, Credit, Distinction, High Distinction. Um eine Bestnote zu bekommen, muss man also “highly distinctive” sein. Das äußert sich dann dadurch, dass z.B. in bewerteten Aufgaben extra schwere Aufgaben mit relativ wenig Punkten sind. Zum Durchkommen reichen die normalen Aufgaben also aus, aber wenn man wirklich volle Punktzahl möchte, muss man sich echt reinhängen.

O-Week

Auch genannt Orientation-Week. Ist die Einführungswoche an der Macquarie University wo alle Erstsemester- und Auslandsstudenten in das Unileben eingeführt werden. Ich besuchte ein Paar Infoveranstaltungen und schaute ein wenig auf dem Kampus herum. Selbstverständlich gab es auch Veranstaltungen zum Kennenlernen und Spaß haben. Der Hauptplatz mit fast allen Studentenvereinigungen. Das gesamte Unigelände ist ca. 500 mal so groß.

Arriving in Sydney

Sydney (33° 51′ S, 151° 12′ O) Ich schlafe fast ein. Nach meinem zweiten Tag an der Uni hab ich nun meinen ersten Sonnenbrand kassiert und kombiniert mit dem frühen Aufstehen und Jetlag ist das vielleicht verständlich. Ich hätte nie gedacht, dass sich der Jetlag signifikant bemerkbar macht, aber, wow, doch tut er.
Als ich letzten Sonntag hier ankam, hatte ich im Flugzeug genug geschlafen, um unter normalen Umständen den Tag durchzustehen, aber zu meiner Überraschung bin ich um 7 Uhr Abends bereits fast im Stehen eingeschlafen. Es wird bereits besser, doch selbst jetzt fühle ich mich als wäre ich schon 24h wach geblieben.
